Our business community: Trading through the pandemic

There is no question that 2020 was a challenging year in so many different ways, however right across our business community we are seeing reasons for optimism. Our Business Centres are bustling with activity. Our tenants, who represent a wide range of different business sectors, covering everything from education, property management, web design, food and drink to health & wellbeing are proving adaptable, resilient and rising to the continuing challenges caused by the pandemic.


Cover with Love

Cover with Love are based at our Wiveliscombe Enterprise Centre. They specialise in venue décor, transforming and styling weddings and events. Working in the weddings and events sector they have had a particularly challenging time recently, but despite this remain positive about the future.

The business was set up in 2015 but it wasn’t until July 2019 that business owner Caroline Coles decided to leave her full time job to concentrate solely on building her business. 2020 was set to be their busiest year yet. However as spring 2020 approached and the pandemic took hold, Caroline recalls booking after booking being postponed or cancelled altogether and her income stream vanishing.

Luckily in January 2021 Cover with Love diversified into balloons, offering a variety of balloon decoration options, something which has proven a life line. Even though gathering in big groups or hosting parties is off limits at the moment it appears that people are still very keen to celebrate big occasions at home, enabling Balloons with Love to grow steadily over the past year.

Despite being an extremely challenging time financially, Caroline was determined to invest in her business and fulfil her dream of moving her business into a showroom, where she could show prospective clients what she could offer in all its sparkle and glory.

In July 2020 Caroline heard about our Wiveliscombe Enterprise Centre, it proved to be the perfect business location for her and she wasted no time moving in and hasn’t looked back.

Caroline is hopeful that the events industry can get back to some form of normality this year and remains heartened that weddings and big events will one day be allowed again and when they do, demand will be high and her business will fly. For now though, Caroline is riding out the storm in her new business premises, perfecting her amazing showroom ready and prepared for the day customers can return.


Gluten Free Gourmet

Gluten Free Gourmet, based at our Wells Enterprise Centre is another business who is adapting and maintaining a positive outlook through these difficult times. Launched 7 years ago, Gluten Free Gourmet produce delicious gluten free food and can cater for any occasion. Having lost a number of sales outlets including shows, markets and events to the pandemic, Gluten Free Gourmet have launched and operated a pre-order collection service to survive these challenging times.

Having outgrown their previous shop premises, business owner Mandy Evans was on the look-out for new bigger premises, when she discovered our Wells Enterprise Centre. The centre offered everything that the business needed for future growth and so Gluten Free Gourmet moved in last October. Since then Gluten Free Gourmet have now started a national delivery service from their unit in Wells and are reaping the benefits of being part of our business community.


Growing Optimism for 2021

It is amazing to be able to report on some good news stories from our own business community. As our two tenants above prove, we have seen demand for our workspace increase, which shows that our critical small business economy is thriving.
